A youth mentor program is stepping up to make a difference in the community. HOPE, which stands for Helping Our People Excel is designed for youth to mentor other youth.

Leaders in the community such as Mayor Tom Henry and different representatives joined together to discuss the future of the city's youth for an event called Alive 100.  This year Fort Wayne and Allen County has seen 29 homicides with one occurring earlier this week.

Alive 100 is painting the picture that all youth can grow up to be successful.  The group HOPE as well as other youth organizations joined community leaders at Glenbrook Dodge to shoot a television commercial.  The organizer of the event, Carlton Lynch wants to show a bigger picture than just having events with speakers.

"There's so much that the community does offer young people but sometimes we don't highlight it enough.  We want every young person who see's the commercial to get involved in some type of youth organization.  Be apart of some kind of entity that's helping provide training, educational skills, different trades and so forth."

Lynch says joining these programs are important because they instill life skills into the youth.  He encourages others to support youth programs like the Boys and Girls Club, HOPE and Voices of Unity.  These are just a few of the youth groups that came together.

9 year old Kennitha Somkit explains why she got involved in Voices of Unity, "I joined not only so I could sing but to give me more of a direction or a path to success.  So many people are dying and it's just not good for the world."

Somkit says she wants to be an OBGYN when she grows up. Goals like that are what Lynch and community leaders say they want to see from youth.

The overall goal of this event and the programs involved is to lower crime by steering the younger generation down a positive path to success.
