The gas leak that broke in Decatur forced at least 50 homes to be evacuated Monday night.

Officials with Nipsco say around 6:30pm, an AEP crew was restoring a pole that was damaged by the strong winds that came through over the weekend and struck a 4 inch gas main.

US 27 was closed for hours as crews worked to shut the leak off.  The displaced families were allowed back in their homes around 1:00am.

Fire Chief Markle explains the dangers of a high pressured gas leak and says fire departments were monitoring the area for extremely high gas levels.  Luckily, they stayed relatively low.
