On Monday, a 7th grader terrorized his middle school in Sparks, Nevada.

On Tuesday, police offered new details about the crime.

They say the 12 year old brought a 9 millimeter semi-automatic handgun from home to school and opened fire.

Teacher Michael Landsberry saw the student on the playground, and tried to get him to put the gun down.

"Teacher down in the playground.  They have one victim in the cafeteria: one in the hall."

Instead, the boy pulled the trigger, killing Landsberry, then turning the weapon on himself.

"Mr. Landsberry's heroic actions by stepping towards the shooter allowed time for other students on the playground area to flee the area."

According to his brother, Michael Landsberry served in the military for 22 years, completing several tours of duty in Afghanistan.

"He probably tried to talk the kid down, protect whoever he could, that sounds like Mike."

Two other students were wounded in the incident.  They're in stable condition.  Investigators are trying to piece together why the boy brought the gun to school.

"It's not clear as of right now if he was targeting anybody in particular, those details will come out as the investigation unfolds."

The ordeal lasted just a few minutes, but for the town of Sparks Nevada, the healing will take much longer.

"Sometimes bad things happen and it is up to all of us to be strong and push forward and know that goodness and love will trump these terrible events that much of you will never forget."
