A Fort Wayne eatery has been around for over thirty years.
Nearly everything is made from local sources, and it even features local recipes submitted by some of you.
People have been coming to the Bagel Station on East State Boulevard for a long time.
In fact, those same customers voted the bakery and restaurant among Fort Wayne's best.
And even though it’s known for its bagels, there are no holes in its business plan.
The bagel station opened thirty two years ago, and it all started with bagels.
"Bagels- right now we offer twenty-three varieties of bagels, and everything is made from scratch. Bagels, everything else, everything from scratch,” general manager Lisa Jackson says.
Over the years, the menu has expanded to salads, soups and sandwiches- and desserts galore.
All made from scratch- made from nearly all local ingredients.
Even the recipes are local.
"A lot of the recipes that we use here, as corny as it sounds, are recipes that we grew up with as kids, and we have guests that bring recipes to us, and those have turned into big sellers for us,” Jackson says.
It's grown into a catering business as well.
Besides the sandwich lunches and pastries, they do full meal spreads and buffets featuring local food.
"Any hour of the day. We start as early as five-thirty in the morning. I have a customer that we do pizzas for at three-thirty in the morning from time to time. And we'll do anything,” Jackson says.
Four years ago, it expanded, opening a satellite downtown inside the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory.
"They are open pretty close to the same hours as we are, and catch a lot of downtown traffic that can't get here,” Jackson says.
This year, Fort Wayne residents voted the bagel station for a special honor.
"We were voted one of the best restaurants in Fort Wayne for 2013, which I'm so honored that happened,” Jackson says.
And there's nothing cream-cheesy about that.
