Brookings S.D. - The IPFW women's basketball team took a 72-62 loss on Thursday night as they were defeated by South Dakota State at Frost Arena. The Mastodons cut a 19 point lead down to six, but the Jackrabbits held on for their 10th Summit League win of the season.

Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting. The junior added eight rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes of action.

IPFW had three players record a bulk of their points on Thursday as Rachel Mauk and Erin Murphy joined Hyde in double figures.  Mauk hit three 3-point field goals, ending the game with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Murphy went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe on her way to scoring 14 points.

South Dakota State used 11 players on Thursday night and all but two scored at least three points. Katie Lingle was the driving force for the Jackrabbits as she scored 18 points and controlled the paint with eight rebounds and three blocks. The 'Dons held Megan Waytashek to just six points and Ashley Eide picked up her scoring in the second half with 11 points in the final 20 minutes of action. Eide was solid all-around with seven boards, six assists, two blocks and two steals.

The two biggest factors that led South Dakota State to victory were points in the paint and bench points. SDSU outscored IPFW 44-20 in the paint and 33-3 in reserve points. The Mastodons shot 40 percent in the second half outscoring the Jackrabbits 38-36. South Dakota State however also shot better in the second half as they connected on 60 percent of their tries.

IPFW played well in the opening four minutes and the final four minutes of the first half, but a 22-3 run put South Dakota State out in front by 12 at the break. The Mastodons led 8-7 after the first media timeout, but an 8-0 run followed as SDSU opened up a seven point advantage. That 8-0 run turned into a 22-3 edge as IPFW only managed three free throws during that stretch of time.

The big run allowed SDSU to open up an 18 point lead, but a four-point play from Rachel Mauk cut that gap to 11 with 2:18 to play in the first half. The deficit roamed around that number for the remainder of the half as Murphy beat the buzzer with a layup pushing the score to 36-24 at the half.

IPFW didn't get out to a great start in the second half as the Jackrabbits grabbed their largest lead of the night at 47-28 with 15:56 to play in the game. The Mastodons showed toughness on the road as they refused to give up by cutting the lead to just six points with 5:15 left in the game.

Hyde was awesome in the second half as she led the charge with 23 points in the final 20 minutes of the game. Hyde hit a 3-point field goal to cut the lead to eight and then quickly followed with a pair of free throws to get it to just six.

The Jackrabbits held off the charge, and connected on free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Eide, Lingle, and Waytashek all scored after IPFW got close and Gabrielle hit from the charity stripe.

The Mastodons will return to action with an 8 p.m. tip Saturday night against the North Dakota State Bison.
