In 2013, the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County ended up tying the all time record of homicides at 44 and 4 people have been shot already in the New Year here in the Summit City.  There is a new Chief of Police, tasked with trying to drastically reduce the violence here in Fort Wayne.

Rusty York handed over the reins of Fort Wayne Police Chief to Garry Hamilton and Hamilton has some words of advice for the people responsible for recent shootings.

"Leave the City of Fort Wayne, because we're coming after you."

While Hamilton isn't releasing his plan for running the Department until he outlines it to staff, he did say that he wants to be more involved with the community.

"Community oriented policing.  Go back to actually meeting with the people.  Taking time to talk to staff and citizens."

Hamilton gave an example of one of the ways he wants to make that happen.

"Something set up where I can meet with the citizens.  I'll have like the Chief Night In, where they can have, I'll set up 2 hours, I'll do it all over the city."

With the promotion of Hamilton, his former post as the Deputy Chief of The Southeast Division has been handed to Derrik Westfield who says he also wants to implement a hands on approach.

"We want to be out there.  Myself personally, be out there.  Meet new people.  Be out there and attend the meetings, going to youth groups, talking to these kids and doing different things like that."

Westfield says he hopes that he'll be able to make youth aware that there are other choices for their life, than one of violence.

"Kids feel like they have nothing to look forward to and you know my goals is to let them know that there is a lot more to look forward to.  So that's what I'm looking at doing, getting out there with them and just letting them know that there's a lot more out there than the gang banging."

The new Director of Public Safety Rusty York appreciates Chief Hamilton's focus on community.

"With what we're dealing with right now, with our homicide issues, I think Garry brings a lot to the plate, because he's worked very closely with the community, and with his investigative experience."

We'll keep you updated as more of Chief Hamilton's plan to get tough on crime is released.
