Body ache, fever, congestion...all symptoms associated with that dreadful flu bug and now word from local health officials that the flu season has started earlier than usual this year.

With thousands of Hoosiers coming down with the flu each year, it is a common illness but Nurse Candy Staadt with the Allen County Public Health Department tells us it can also be a serious one.

"There are deaths by flu.  Flu can cause deaths particularly in the very young and very old."

That's why the Centers For Disease Control recommends the first step in protecting yourself from the flu is by getting a flu shot or flu mist.

"We're encouraging everyone to get flu shots that can get flu shots, and that's anybody over the age of 6 months."

People with an exceptionally high risk of contracting influenza are 6 months old and under, along with epople age 65 and up and those that have immune compromising diseases or have received chemotherapy.  Even if you are not in a high risk category, you should get a shot to help keep others protected that are at a greater risk.

"Adults that are taking care of young children, grandparents, parents whoever they may be.  They really need to get the vaccine to take care of those young children."

With all the positives for getting a flu shot, WFFT's Brooke Welch even filled out the paperwork and got one for herself.

Along with the flu shot, good health habits like washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, disinfecting surfaces throughout your house, and not sharing food or drink, can also help prevent the spread of germs.

There are many places in the area that you can walk-in and get a flu shot.  For help in finding a location, contact the Allen County Health Department.
