A Fort Wayne family is thanking their dog tonight after the pet helped them escape from a house fire.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department says the fire started in the kitchen of this house on the 1800 block of Glenwood Avenue just after one early this morning.
The dog's barking woke the homeowner and her two children, who got out of the house safely, with their dog.
While we don't see any visible damage on the outside, the report says the inside has heavy smoke damage.
Neighbors say they might not have made it out if it wasn't for the dog's barking.
"She has an English Bulldog, and he was sleeping with her actually, or she was, and she woke them up. And if it weren't for that dog, they were all upstairs, I believe, they wouldn't have made it out... Stella, her name's Stella, is the English Bulldog, and she saved them. Certainly, that's the first thing she said,” says Brenda Drayer.
Neighbors say their insurance is providing the family a place to say and giving them clothing.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
