You may have noticed road closures and detours around town, and might be wondering what the construction is all about. Here is an overview of some of the major construction projects in the works in Fort Wayne and Allen County.

This year, Fort Wayne City Transportation will spend $13.6 million on improvements plus an additional $10 million from a bond that will go towards major city streets.

The $13.6 million will go toward more than 50 miles of paving, ten miles of concrete reconstruction, and 12 miles of chip and seal repairs. $500,000 will go toward sidewalk enhancements.

Fort Wayne is contributing to a road improvement project on Maplecrest Rd. between E. State Blvd. and Lake Ave. The project includes lighting, landscaping, additional lanes, plus a sidewalk and trail.

The city is also converting Wells St. and Fairfield Ave. to two-way streets. A roundabout will soon connect Fairfield Ave., Ewing St., Superior St. and Wells St. downtown.

The I-69 and Dupont Rd. interchange will be re-constructed to form a diverging diamond interchange. This modification will take Dupont Rd. traffic to the left of the roadway as it crosses the bridge over I-69.

In 2013, Allen county officials approved the beginning stages of a $35 million road and trails project. The county plans to completely rebuild a 4.5 mile stretch of bass road by 2020. The construction will also widen the bridge over I-69, add lanes, walking trails and up to four roundabouts to Bass Rd.

The Allen County Council is also working on a roundabout near Union Chapel Rd. and Auburn Rd.
