The city of Berne, Indiana is known for its Swiss culture.
And speaking of cultures, the Swiss are known for their cheese.
And one business in Berne is making some of the best cheese in the region.
WFFT’s Andrew Logsdon was having a 'grate' time at Swissland Cheese today.

This place is the holy land of cheese.
No really, the Swiss is holey.
Swissland Cheese in Berne has been making Swiss, and cheddar, and other varieties, for 32 years.
"We make about thirty-two different kinds of cheeses here. Majority of them are cheddars, but we also do your basics. The Colby, the farmers, the cojack, we do a mozzarella, we do gouda,” says owner Mary Johnson.
And people say it is gouda.
Swissland Cheese is able to produce all of these year round made entirely with local milk.
"We ship throughout the year. I know some places don't ship their cheese in the summer, but we do,” Johnson says.
Johnson says they produce it as natural as possible.
Most of the milk comes from grass fed cows, and they are one of the few producers of raw milk cheese.
"Our raw milk cheeses are from grass fed cows. That's all they're fed, is grass year round. The cheese is unpasteurized, but it is brought up to a temperature and then brought back down to cultivate the culture, if you will,” Johnson says.
Its cheese is sold at the store in Berne, several retailers in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, and since 2006, online.
And it's been featured at the Indianapolis Super Bowl and the Indy 500.
Johnson says it's helped to drive sales across the country as the cheese wheels keep spinning.
"We are one of two cheese manufacturers in the state that are recognized by the state. The impact it has on our local community is it brings people from all over the country,” Johnson says.
