Leesburg Man Uses Lincoln Highway for a Cause

Local man raises money for a cause by walking across the state.
You might be thinking what could the Historic Lincoln Highway have to do with Alzheimer’s disease. Both part of a local mans life and now he's found a way to raise money to benefit them both.

The Alzheimer’s Association says someone develops the disease almost every minute.

"It’s as hard on the family as it is on the individual maybe harder."

Jeff Blair from Leesburg Indiana is on a mission to change that.

"I am walking across the state of Indiana all the way across Fort Wayne and new haven to the Ohio border."

With his wife carol by his side, their walk has a purpose.

Jeff is president of the local historic Lincoln highway association. The highway runs from New York through northern Indiana and ends in San Francisco. WFFT caught up with the Blair’s in the Marshall County town of bourbon. Blair says when he was looking for a way to raise money for his organization, his father in law was battling Alzheimer’s.

"At the time I was contemplating that first walk, he was suffering and my wife carol was suffering too."

The fight was lost in 2009. That's when Blair started planning to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research. During his first walk in 2011, he successfully raised more than 20-thousand dollars.

"The last year of his life it was really tough. We were glad we were there but on the other hand it was really traumatic."

This is day six of Blair’s eleven day walk. Blair and his wife will continue their walk through Monday when they expect to meet the Ohio border, rain or shine.

"If it rains, well keep going I put on my raincoat thinking it might rain this afternoon so we're prepared for anything...Except for lightning then we're getting in the car!"

If you're interested in supporting Blair’s walk half of the donation will go to the Alzheimer’s Association and the other half to the Lincoln Highway. Checks should be written to the Lincoln Highway Association. They should be mailed to 402 W. Washington St. SOuth Bend, IN 46601.
