Lawmakers Request Face-to-Face Meeting with VA Secretary

Indiana lawmakers are now asking for a face-to-face meeting with the newly appointed VA Secretary Sloan Gibson.

Indiana lawmakers are now asking for a face-to-face meeting with the newly appointed VA Secretary Sloan Gibson.

In May, Indiana Senators Joe Donnelly and Dan Coats co-authored a letter to the department's former Secretary Eric Shinseki. Shinseki has since resigned and now the two lawmakers are reaching out to the new leadership. Senator Coats is also calling for an independent investigation for local VA hospitals.

"We absolutely have to really rethink the whole means by which we provide care for our veterans. As I said they gotta be at the front of the line, not the back of the line," said Senator Coats in a phone interview.

On Thursday, the spokesperson for the Fort Wayne VA Hospital released this statement: "the VA has received the letters and will respond to the senators."

So far Senator Coats and Donnelly have not heard back from the original letter. The lawmakers are concerned about dangerous wait times and unauthorized scheduling practices that have been reported at VA hospitals around the country.
