We are saluting Retired Staff Sergeant John Middleton, a man who has served more than 21 years in the Army.

"I was very proud to serve, everyday I served."

At just 19 years old, John Middleton made the decision to join the Army.

"At the time in 1980, the hostages were taken in Iran and I felt it my duty to join."

The Fort Wayne native completed Army Ranger training and served deployments in Honduras, Germany, and Italy.

"I served as an infantry man, squad leader, and platoon sergeant."

"Even though we didn't want him to go, of course we backed him up and he went off as a young boy and came back a grown man that I didn't know anymore."

With more than 2 decades in the military, John finished his career in Fort Campbell, Kentucky at the 101st Airborne Division.

"It gave me a lot of discipline, which I didn't have at the time and also taught me to never quit.  If you start something, finish it."

Middleton is a father to 3 boys, Kyle, John, and Cody who are also in the Army.  Cody served a deployment in Afghanistan and is currently overseas in Italy.

"John's boys are the 6th generation in our family to have served in the military.  Our family is definitely military oriented."

John's sister Rae Oswald nominated him to be a Hometown Hero.

"I think the military turned him into a wonderful man and I'm proud to say he's my brother."
