We're saluting Retired Command Sergeant Major Fritz Bultemeyer, a local man who has served more than four decades in the military.
The Decatur native spent more than 40 years in the military, serving as a communications advisor to the South Vietnamese Army in 1967 and an Army contractor in Afghanistan in 2007.
Fritz was also deployed to Afghanistan in 2004.
Among his numerous metals, Fritz was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal. He also holds the Bronze Star Medal for his actions during the 1968 TET Offensive.
After returning from Vietnam, Fritz entered the army reserve 601st Military Police Battalion in Fort Wayne. Fritz worked his way up from the rank of Private to a Command Sergeant Major.
