Saturday the Elevate City Church put on their 3rd annual Back to School Bash and there was a huge turnout for 500 backpacks, free books and free food.

“I have children that go to school and I live in low income housing and I have no job so this is a great opportunity for me to get school supplies for my children,” said Regina Leshore.

Regina Leshore, said that Elevate City Church’s Back to School Bash is loved by many in the Weisser Park area because people in her community need the extra help when it's time for their kids to go back to school.

Elevate City Church moved to Fort Wayne in 2012, and before they started this event to gain the respect from the community, Kyle Mills, Head Pastor at Elevate City Church said they consistently helped people to lower their guard and let the church into their community.

“Asking people is there anything we can do to serve you and make a difference whether it be mowing your yard, helping to clean up your house, helping to fix things in your houses and we found there was great need,” said Mills.

The first year the back to school bash started, 120 free backpacks were given out. Now they are giving out 500 with help from sponsors Wal-Mart, Starbucks and others.

Kids at the park Saturday are so grateful and understand why this event is so important to their families. Tennesee Robinson said she enjoys the event and knows it helps her parents.

“Have fun you know, just enjoy myself and act like a kid. That way you won’t have to go around asking for it,” said Robinson.

Carol Miller is amazed that this event can be put on for free.

“I think it's awesome because these people don’t get paid for this.  They are doing this out of the kindness of their heart.  They’re taking time out on their Saturday they could be anywhere,” said Miller.
