151st Birthday of Gene Stratton-Porter Celebrated this Past Weekend

The Chautauqua Days Festival took place this past weekend in Rome City.
"It's just an incredibly important part of not only this community's history, but also Indiana's history."
The Chautauqua Days Festival took place this past weekend in Rome, Indiana.

Indiana's most widely read female author, Gene Stratton-Porter would've celebrated her 151st birthday this past Sunday if she were still living today.

Festival goers were able to tour the home where she lived from 1912 - 1919.  The festival also featured boat tours of Sylvan Lake, a Taste of Herbs presentation, live bluegrass music, and lawn and craft activities.

Site Manager Dave Fox explains why this festival is so important.  "It's just an incredibly important part of not only this community's history, but also Indiana's history.  Gene Stratton-Porter is still to this day, the most widely read female author that Indiana has ever had.  And she was an early conservationist."

If you missed the festival this past weekend, there are other festivals planned for this fall.  If you would like more information about the Gene Stratton-Porter site, you can go to their website:  http://www.genestratton-porter.com/
