A 21 month old boy was bitten in the face while playing with a dog in Koscuisko County.

The child was flown to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne because of the severe injuries.

The small child was simply playing with the family dog like any other time he's done before.  According to neighbors, the dog acted out of character which left the child in serious condition.

Small child...big dog...a combination this family friend says was never a problem until it happened.

"He's never done anything I mean, the only thing he'd probably do is lick you to death."

The child unintentionally stepped on the great dane's paw, and caused him to snap.

"The dog turned around and bit the child's face causing a laceration from the forehead area down to the nose bridge area."

"I was extremely shocked.  The dog is so sweet.  I'm short and he's probably up to here on me."

The 21 month old is the couple's only child.

"They didn't know what to do and they had a rag on his head and ran over to our house and banged on our door."

Chad Hill with the Koscuisko County Sheriff's Department said the child had to be flown to the hospital.

"Officers and paramedics arrived to the scene.  The EMS quickly requested the Lutheran Air to respond to the scene due to the severity of the actual bite."

Peggy Bender with the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control says dogs should be trained to interact with children.

"Any dog can bite.  It's our responsibility to make sure our pets are never in a situation where they feel the need to bite.  When animals feel pain, they may turn around and bite just because they're frightened or they're hurt."

Animal Care and Control says that supervision with pets and children is critical to avoid injuries to either party.

The family's neighbor said the child had stitches and should be home soon.  The dog is still at the family's home and is under quarantine.
