The Women’s Health Link in Fort Wayne is preparing women for a worst case scenario. This morning the organization hosted a free self defense class to learn how to protect themselves from harm.

"Self defense is critical especially for women these days that might find themselves in situations that are potentially harmful to themselves,” said J. Brown, a local pastor and martial arts instructor. “They really have to know the basics of how to defend these attacks and situations and that's what were here to help with today.”

Knowing how to protect yourself can be the difference between a life or death situation. The Women’s Health Link which specializes in giving free resources to local women provided the open workshop.

"I want them to be able to take away a little more self confidence as well and know that they don’t have to be afraid and they can defend themselves when the situations arise," said Brown.

Sisters Kathryn and Emma MacDonald know they aren’t immune to crime. This is their way of getting ready.

"It can happen to anyone so we want to make sure that that does not happen to us," said Kathryn.

"It really boosts our confidence and makes us feel a lot more able to defend ourselves," Emma added.

"We’re here because we really want to learn about how to defend ourselves,” said Brown. “We think that’s really important and something that every woman should know because you never know when you might be in a situation that you might need that. The number one top thing I think is awareness and preparation ahead of time and not to get yourself caught off guard but always to know where to go for help."

Julie Perkins is executive director of the Women’s Health Link. She says any woman could take something away from this.

"If it's a smaller woman versus a larger man, these techniques, I could see these techniques working, they’re kind of unique," said Perkins.
