Thousands of people from across the nation will be in Fort Wayne this weekend for Gearfest.  It's the largest music expo open to the public in the country.

WFFT's Brooke Welch spoke with a Sweetwater representative about the event plus the completion of an $18 million dollar expansion project.

It is an event that is literally music to many people's ears.

"Most trade shows are closed and they are specifically for people in the trade and the music retail trade but Gearfest is totally unlike that and it's free and open to the public."

VP of Corporate Communications, Christoper Guerin says Sweetwater Sound is expecting more than 10,000 people and 200 vendors.

"There are 18 tents right now that will be full of gear and virtually everything, not virtually, everything will be on sale at some level or another."

This weekend's activities also debut the completion of an $18 million dollar expansion.  That includes, 54,000 additional square feet of warehouse space, conference rooms, a larger area for the popular academy of music, a cafe, more office space, and even a slide.

"People love to make music.  They love to record music.  They love to perform it and that has sustained our business, even through down times and more recently, we've just been growing like crazy."

The love of music is evident as their Academy of Music is now the largest in the region.

"Our Academy of Music" is now over 450 students so it's just continuing to grow and grow and grow so we long ago grew out the academy space.

The event this weekend includes giveaways, workshops, and special deals.  It takes place on Friday and Saturday.
