Social Media Expert Gives Insight on Being Careful Online

We live in an age where social media dominates the way people communicate.  It is so easy nowadays to make a status update and share your favorite pictures, but not everyone is careful about what they post online.

In a special report, WFFT's Charnae Davenport spoke to a social media expert who shows us the positive sides or "likes" to social media and when you should hold back on the share button...

We've all used it at some point.  Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are a part of daily life but do you think before you post?  Updating the public on every little detail that goes on in your life could be more harmful, depending on what you share.

"I've got Facebook, Vine, Twitter, Instagram, the whole she-bang, and Snapchat."

The more social media sites, the more time people spend browsing through feeds and retweeting tweets.  Brooke Taylor says she used social media to do more than just pass time.

"I would say maybe like four hours a day,I'm constantly on there...if I'm not doing anything I'm opening twitter or I am opening Facebook, Instagram or I am snap chatting my little sisters back home."

Social media can be addictive and it is easy to understand why some people get carried away.

"The number one thing that people need to remember about social media, it is out of your control and it is permanent."

Social Media Professional John Kaufeld at IPFW managed social media accounts for the college.  He says there are some non spoken rules when opening a social media account.

"We're much faster to share thins online now and the things that we share can paint a really interesting picture of us."

"I actually try to be very conscious of what I post because I am already in the public eye."

Recognize the voice?  Brooke is a local DJ on US93.3.

"So if I post something a little crazy, not only will I get in trouble with it from work but I also have a moral background."

Several employers won't admit it, but according to, 37% of employers use social media to screen potential job candidates.

"It only takes a second to take somebody's name, punch it into Google and see what pops up. Especially because you know their name, you know their hometown, that's very easy." 5:13 "often times people forget when you search Google, it's not just your name that pops up, there's a tab that says images. so any image that has your name associated its gonna pop with right there."

Whether you use it for leisure or for business, eyes are watching.  Brooke and WFFT sat down to see what would pop up when Googling her name.  Because she has two fairly common names, Brooke and Taylor, anything can pop up.  Even undesirable pictures posted by other Brooke Taylor's that don't reflect the interests of this one.  Kaufeld's solution?

"Register your name as a domain because if your world goes awesome, you want control of that domain.  It gives you a home that you really own.  It's not just something you posted on Facebook."

If you've share one too many selfies and need other ways to clean up your carbon footprint, certain privacy settings can be used.  However, if someone uses a screen grab, let's say the tweet you posted about skipping work because of a hangover, that cannot be untweeted.

"So think before you share anything, you do need to be aware of the presence you are creating out there."

The key here is to be aware of your presence online.  Employers, Admissions Officers, and the entire world is watching.
