WFFT's Brooke Welch spoke with out Washington Representatives about this very controversial issue and asked how tensions with Russia will impact Hoosiers.
Even though the tension is building almost halfway around the world, that doesn't mean it couldn't eventually affect us in Northeast Indiana.
"The history of Europe is that small things turn into big wars and ya know we want to nip this one in the bud."
Senator Coats has been instrumental in working to get the Senate to approve more sanctions. Sanctions that received an unanimous vote in the Senate but that the President has not implemented.
"Sanctions against Russia and hitting them in the pocketbook can make a different but we need to be united in this effort."
Congressman Marlin Stutzman agrees. He does not believe the President is making a very strong statement to Russia.
"I think the President is very weak on this. I don't know how he gains any of that power back. I think Congress is going to have to be the one to come up and make the decisions collectively."
All of this tension, comes right after the Pentagon released their budget a few weeks ago, cutting military funding dramatically. Senator Coats weighs in...
"This is absolutely the worst time to be cutting back on defense. National strength through support of our National Security System and our military is one of the best things we can do. To say to the world, 'you need to take this into consideration before you go out there and do something stupid'!"
Congressman Stutzman agrees that the United States needs to be careful in how much funding is cut for protecting our nation.
"I don't think we should be taking a step backwards. I think we need to make sure we're ready, we're capable, we're still the strongest military power in the world, but that doesn't mean that others are not trying to challenge us."
Indiana Senator Donnelly was not available for an interview but a spokesperson from his office released this statement...
"Senator Donnelly is an Official Senate Armed Services Committee Travel this week and his bipartisan mission includes a stop in the Ukraine. Senator Donnelly believes that Russia's invasion and annexation of Crimea is an unacceptable violation of international law and an affront to established international agreements. He supports Ukraine's sovereignty and thinks it's critical that the US continue working with our allies to impose tough sanctions against Russia, while promoting political and economic stability for the people of the Ukraine."
We will continue to keep you updated as possible sanctions against Russia.
