Locally Made Monday - Kernel Coladas Gourmet Popcorn
By ANDREW LOGSDON | firstname.lastname@example.org
If you love popcorn- there's only so much jiffy pop you can have before you're sick of it.
But if you're seeking some of that big-city fancy style corn, you don't have to leave the area.
WFFT shows you how in this week's Locally Made Monday.
The specialty flavors coming out of Kernel Coladas Gourmet Popcorn in Columbia City help it stand apart from some of those other places.
They have over thirty flavors, in fact.
It started out as a dream in college for owner Lindsay Hively.
And now, it's popping up a flavorful future.
"We basically specialize in all the crazy, wacky flavors of popcorn that you could think of and some that you can't even think of too,” Hively says.
Ever tried s'mores flavored popcorn?
What about dill pickle?
These are some of the uncommon types of corn found at Kernel Coladas Gourmet Popcorn just off US-30 in Columbia City.
"Well, we've got your standard flavors like original popcorn and caramel corn, and cheddar cheese corn, then we've got some wacky ones, like dill pickle popcorn, buffalo hot wing, Christmas cookie,” Hively says.
She started the company back in 2008 as a freshman at Indiana University.
In those five years, sales are popping across the country- and even into Canada.
Hively says their variety allows them to compete with, and beat, the big-city corn counterparts.
"They really specialize in a few flavors, and they've been around forever, so we're a little bit different in that we have thirty different flavors,” Hively says.
Right now, they have five employees and hope to expand with extra retail stores and growth on the web.
That's her kernel of truth for the future.
"We did a hundred grand last year, and this year, we've already beat that, so Christmas is our busiest time of year,” Hively says.
