What started as a small yarn-dying operation in a bedroom, has turned into a world-wide business.

WFFT got a look inside how one local business is making a name for Northeast Indiana in this week's Locally Made Monday.

We're at Fort Wayne's Simply Socks Yarn Company.

Even though it's mostly internet-based, owner Allison Van Zandt says the store brings in international customers.

"Eight years ago, we started it two blocks from here in a bedroom of our home, shipping out a few dozen orders a week," Van Zandt says.

And now, it's this.

"and it's turned into something after eight years, where we ship out hundreds of orders all over the world," Van Zandt says.

Simply Socks Yarn Company sits in this brick building on State Boulevard.

It started with internet sales, dying yarn inside.

Today the retail store is open one day a week.

"And I think when my accountant and my lawyer heard about it, they thought I was probably crazy. I thought, well, if I make forty dollars a week after taxes, I can stay home with future children, and it turned into something that I do full time," Van Zandt says.

And it has.

She's also hired three part time employees for the store, which brings customers from as far as Canada.

"It allows customers to come into Fort Wayne one day a week to travel here, to support the other two yarn stores that are in the area when they are here," Van Zandt says.

She says that way everyone local wins.
