What turned out to be a bright idea over sixty years ago is spreading its light across the world- all from its headquarters in Garrett, Indiana.
WFFT’s Andrew Logsdon has this week's Locally Made Monday report.
Group Dekko started making wire fridge harnesses back in the 50s.
Today, they've expanded to five industries.
And with factories here in northeast Indiana, and several more on different continents, it's taking locally made to a whole new level.
It all started with an idea by two men in 1952.
"So they started with a wire harness for refrigerators, and basically just started creating that product just stand alone. They created from that point, hire five people, and put their first facility in Albion, Indiana. So we've had roots in northeast Indiana from the start of the company sixty-one years ago,” says Group Dekko Culture and Retention Manager Jennifer Fisher.
It's grown to a $158 million company with over twelve hundred employees.
Six hundred of them work in northeast Indiana, where it produces lighting assemblies.
"The idea was to be a solution provider for customers. So to be able to do component manufacturing, and meet the needs of any customer-based on what they would have. We can do processes from injection molding, to stamping, to bending, to assembling, and pretty much anything in between that,” Fisher says.
With factories in Juarez, Mexico, and china- its product goes around the world.
"These lights are actually up right now in the pentagon! So if you went into the pentagon, you'd see some of our lights up there,” Fisher says.
And it's always looking for more people.
Group Dekko has programs for high schoolers and college students.
"We're trying to re-brand it, that there are a lot of job opportunities in manufacturing, that many people just don't know about, so we're trying to catch into the next generation of young people who many never have thought of manufacturing as an opportunity,” Fisher says.
