“We believe this money can be around for many decades and I just don’t want it to be chipped away that easily and I think we're on the right track to protecting it,” said Councilman Tom Smith
City Councilman Tom Smith said that Mayor Tom Henry’s Legacy Fund Committee is a good idea, knowing that this would be another buffer to save the legacy funding.
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting Karl Bandmer, the deputy Mayor, presented the Legacy Joint Funding Committee to the councilmen saying this is just a way for ideas proposed by citizens to be vetted by others before coming to the city council. Councilman Tom Didier explained the 6-2 vote Tuesday night is to proceed with the process next week.
“Another buffer for the legacy process that way someone that wants to bring a project forward its going to have to go through basically this buffer before it comes to us,” said Councilman Didier.
Councilman Geoff Paddock said this is a great way for the initial screening to go to the committee before coming to the city council.
“It’s another level of responsibility and I think it helps us safeguard the legacy money for the future so it will be around here a hundred years,” said Councilman Paddock.
Clyde Theater in
Rick Kinney, President of Keel Event Productions is hoping legacy money can help revamp the Clyde Theater.
“If we're going to raise millions of dollars to renovate the theater it would be great to see the city of Fort Wayne step up and contribute with some legacy funds as they have with other performing arts centers,” said Kinney.
Kinney said he believes he will get the funding because the Clyde Theater will provide jobs, which is what Councilman Paddock said the committee and council is looking for.
“It’s going to change the landscape of the community, it might add jobs. It might improve our neighborhoods,” said Paddock.
