Another winter blast hit the region, creating longer commutes and slick road conditions.  First responders were busy attending to slide offs and crashes.

It wasn't just the roads that were a problem; the wet heavy snow was piling up on stop lights around the region.  The pile-up was preventing some motorists from seeing the signal.

Toni Mayo, Indiana Department of Transportation,  says crews with bucket trucks went to stop lights and cleared them off.

“I know that our signal techs are very tiered but we’ve got to keep those lenses visible,” said Mayo.

First responders were also swamped. Fort Wayne Police responded to more than 40 slide offs, 25 property damage accidents and three injuries as a result of accidents..

Fort Wayne police actually stopped responding to crashes that didn’t involve accidents at 8:30 a.m because the call volume was extremely high.   Police eventually did start going to all crashes again around 1:30 pm.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department saw 53 slide-offs, 14 total accidents with 2 involving injuries.

“Our Crew is going to be on call until midnight then we are going to be on-call for certain locations,” said Mayo.
