Making a wish come true for a family from Germany, that was the mission of the Fort Wayne Fire Department Wednesday evening.
Cindy Fankhanel and her two sons John Louis and Julian reached out to the Fort Wayne Fire department two years ago after the department sent a letter expressing their condolences. Cindy's husband Dirk died on May 20, 2012 when he bravely entering a burning furniture store with his fellow firefighters.
That nice gesture turned into a trip across the world Wednesday evening, when the family arrived at the Fort Wayne International Airport to see the country their father always dreamed to visit.
Private Bryan Peterson is one of the organizers of the project called Dirk's Dream. He says it's customary for the Fort Wayne Fire Department to send these letters when a firefighter is killed in the line of duty, even if it's half way across the world.
The family is going to be in town until August 13th and the trip was payed for entirely by the FWFD. On Thursday, Cindy, John Louis and Julian will be able to live the dream Dirk never had the opportunity to experience - to visit an American fire department.
