Last year,  The Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters Union, voiced its concern to city council about the 2014 budget.  Their concern was for public safety, claiming that the department’s overtime budget was slashed, meaning there are five fewer firefighters on duty at any given time.

Pat Roller, City Controller, attempted to free $800,000 from the cities budget. $400,000 would be taken from the Parks Department and the other $400,000 from Public Works.

However, city council only approved half of the money.  The $400,000 from the Public Works Department is available, and will be transferred to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.  This Parks Department will not lose any funding.

There is a new class of Fort Wayne Firefighters who begin training in a couple of weeks, but the department needs to come up with an additional $400,000 to ‘maintain public safety’.
