Fort Wayne Closer to Legacy Fund Committee

The Fort Wayne City Council continues to move towards creating a committee that would determine how the city's legacy funds are used.

Tuesday council members made some changes to the proposal.

Councilmember John Shoaff brought up several amendments that councilmembers approved.

Several of them were administrative- such as emailing and handing out copies of legacy fund proposals to all members of the committee.

The most significant change is that the committee would now grow to nine members, from the proposed seven, if it is approved.

There will be three city council members on the board, three members of mayor Tom Henry's administrative staff and three residents from the community.

Now, here's how that works.

City council members will appoint one of them, and the city administrative staff selecting another and then the eight committee members would pick the final appointee.

The city council will vote on approving the legacy fund committee at their meeting in two weeks- September 9th.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting councilmember Mitch Harper proposed an ordinance that would require the city to file union-ratified deals with the council by the next meeting.

Harper says several recent contracts approved by the city and union members sat for months before appearing on council meeting dockets.

Mayor Henry's office issued a statement today calling harper's allegation false and said all collective bargaining agreements have been filed in a timely manner.

Councilmembers will vote to approve that ordinance next Tuesday at the September 2nd meeting.

And going back to the legacy fund committee, there's no guarantee that will pass in two weeks, as councilmembers still have questions about how it will work.
