WFFT's Brooke Welch speaks with INDOT about the importance of driving safely around construction zones.
Most people think that construction zone speed limits are for the safety of the workers which they are, but they are also for the safety of the drivers as well.
Last year in Indiana, 13 drivers were killed and an additional 450 people were injured in work zone crashes.
Indiana Department of Transportation, Toni Mayo stresses the importance of driving safely.
"When you're in a work zone, you need to slow down because they are people just like you and me and at the end of the day, we all want to go home to our families."
Road construction worker Joel Nagel has experienced loss firsthand.
"My coworker was actually killed on the toll road a year and a half ago and it really hit close to home. Obviously, everytime a car comes near ya now, ya know the possibilities."
A mistake by driver, that friends and family will deal with for a lifetime.
"Ya can't even describe it ya know, the semi driver was just distracted, and that took Chad's life that day and left behind his wife and his children."
Nagel just has one request. Whenever you see the flashing lights or orange barrels...
"Just slow down and drive aware, that's all I ask."
April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month and there is a $5,000 dollar scholarship being offered to high school and college students that come up with a Drive Now Text Later campaign. Click here for more info.
