Fort Wayne police say they found a man shot to death in a vacant lot on the city's southeast side on Monday night. WFFT's Brooke Welch went back to the neighborhood Tuesday and has reaction from neighbors that heard the gunshots and actually saw our area's 7th murder victim.
Imagine hearing gunshots that leads to the dead body of an 18 year old victim right outside your house. That's what happened to the 61 year old woman that lives on the 5200 block of Weisser Park Avenue. While she did not want to be interviewed, neighbor Sole Booker heard gunfire and thought it was fireworks. "I was sitting on the porch and I heard about five shots."
Booker walked down to his neighbors to see what was going on. "They shot him in the head four times, so I figured he was dead."
Neighbor Laquanda Davis says the violence in Fort Wayne is getting out of control. "It's still ridiculous for the black africans to be killing each other the way that they are. Like how he was laying there like that. And blood all over his face, bullet holes in his face. It was really ridiculous."
The victim is 18 year old Sean Walker. Davis says the violence needs to stop, "It's very scary, it's summertime. Schools out and kids should be able to play and have fun in the summer. Not stay cooped up in their houses, because we're scared somebody is going to get shot."
Davis lost her brother in 2006 and her cousin recently, and feels bad for Sean Walker's family. "It's gonna hurt. They are going to have to deal with it for awhile. It's going to take about four years for them to even get used to it, him not coming home or calling."
Homicide numbers are actually down from last year. We are currently at 7 for 2014. At this time last year, there had been 23 homicides.
