Fort Wayne Community Schools recognized one South Side High School teacher's efforts for students inside and out of the classroom.

It named South Side History Teacher Emily Oberlin as it's Teacher of the Year.

FWCS Public Relations Director Melanie Hand says besides motivating kids inside the classroom, Oberlin went above and beyond outside by using creative methods to keep students involved.

Some of Oberlin's students were close to a coach who died in the past year and she organized a campaign called "Let it be Known" allowing the students to express their grief and honor their coach which Oberlin says taught her a lot.

Oberlin says, "You do, you open your eyes too.  Students are amazing and if you give them the opportunity, they're going to show you why they are amazing and they'll grow and impress you and teach you along the way."

Other finalists were Jenny Barney of Glenwood Park Elementary, Estelle Griggs of Forest Park Elementary, Carissa Richardson of Northwood Middle School, and Wendy Wickern of Blackhawk Middle School.
