As a result of the nasty weather, Fort Wayne Community Schools was forced to close its doors for the ninth time this year, and for those students who rely on the school district for free meals, they have been forced to find food elsewhere.

About 71 percent of all FWCS students are on free or reduced lunches, and many of those students depend on one or even two meals a day from the school, but with the inclement weather kids have been without those meals and it’s costing FWCS thousands.

A spokesperson with FWCS tells WFFT that  elementary schools were forced to throw out about $15,000 worth of food, an additional $1,500 in labor and roughly 7,000  in unplanned expenses.  Luckily, the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission was able to make use of some of that unused food.
