With Earth Day happening this week, many local organizations are teaming up to clean up.  Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation, along with the Northeast Indiana Geocachers are hosting their 3rd annual "Cache In, Trash Out" event.

The event is designed for the community to join together and volunteer in celebration of Earth Day.

"We are a nature preserve and the Parks Departments likes to be a steward of the land, so Earth Day is a perfect time for that."

Renee Sinacola is the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator for Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation.  The Parks Department is teaming up with the Northeast Indiana Geocachers on Sunday, April 27th for their third annual "CITO" event.

"It is a day for volunteers to come out and help clean up Lindenwood Nature Preserve so that we can open it on May 1st."

The Parks Department chooses the week of Earth Day each year to get the community involved in taking care of the environment.

"We all need the green space.  Even though you may not realize it, trees and plants are the source of a lot of food, paper, lumber, oxygen.  So we need spaces like Lindenwood Nature Preserve in order to preserve the land for future generations."

Matthew Herald is the organizer for the local Geocachers.  Geocaching is a world-wide hobby that involved the use of GPS satellites to find hidden treasures.

"The idea here this weekend is that we're here to volunteer to give back to the community that we Geocache in."

Dozens of volunteers are expected to come to the Lindenwood Nature Preserve this Sunday, to help pick up debris, move logs from the trail, rake and pick up  trash.  If you want to get involved, the event is from 2pm - 6pm.

"With the CITO events in correlation with Earth Day, now I have a chance to actually help clean up and get the preserve ready.  That was just an opportunity that I couldn't pass up."
