WFFT's Tara Petitt has some tips for businesses wanting to clean up their waste and get nominated for an award.
Going green for businesses can be difficult because they don't have the convenience of curbside recycling like residential homes, but the Allen County Solid Waste District is providing a service to make it easier for your company to recycle and save money at the same time.
"Always a business is thinking about their bottom line and it's something that they want to do usually but may not be able to. They might not think they can afford it, they may not know to work it into their finances."
By producing less waste, your business can save money. The Solid Waste Management District is offering waste audits for businesses.
Jodi Leamon is the Business Technical Coordinator for the Allen County District.
"We can go into a business, we can take a look at their waste stream, what they're producing and how much and also their trash. We can advise them on how to produce less waste."
The goal is to help businesses get into a cost-effective position where they can recycle.
"You wanna be operating efficiently and economically, so you really wanna think about anything that goes out. What can you make off of that? So if there's a metal you could be getting money for or paper oftentimes you can make money, cardboard, things like that. Those are commodities that are worth something. So that is something you shouldn't just throw away. It's something that you can possibly make money off of."
There are many ways your business can reduce waste.
Print on both sides of you paper. Don't print unless you absolutely need to.
Use high-recycled content paper and other recycled products.
Avoid purchasing styrofoam and plastic.
Every year, the Allen County Solid Waste Management District honors businesses in our community that are taking extra steps to go green with an awards ceremony.
If you would like to nominate your business for an award, or if your company is interested in a waste audit, you can visit their website at acwastewatcher.org.
The awards ceremony will be held in August.
