"But every time I'm printing on one of my presses, I just imagine when the press was made, and how many things have probably been printed on it, and what kind of things have been printed on that press at that time." -Julie Wall Toles, owner, Hedgehog Press.
Anyone can print things at home off the computer.
But we found a Fort Wayne print shop that is doing things the old fashioned way.
WFFT’s Andrew Logsdon has this week's episode of Locally Made Monday.
At Hedgehog Press, they're reviving a lost art.
Their machines are over a hundred years old.
Now, it might take a while to print as they did back then, but the look is unique- and it's the only shop of its kind in the area.
"I do custom printing on a letter press, which is really old. I have two letter presses here, are each over a hundred years old,” says owner Julie Wall Toles.
At her shop on Columbia and Tecumseh in Fort Wayne, Wall Toles specializes in old-style printing.
"Really old style printing, which is fun, but it leaves a beautiful impression on the paper,” says Wall Toles.
It creates wedding invitations, personal stationary, or business cards.
“It's also a place where i do different forms of printmaking. I make my own art work here, which I like to do intaglio prints with relief printing,” says Wall Toles.
It's the old equipment that helps the product stand out.
Her art work, and her prints- are for sale in shops around the city.
And you can do it too.
With some lessons, it's open for other print makers.
She says printing like this has its own story.
"But every time I'm printing on one of my presses, I just imagine when the press was made, and how many things have probably been printed on it, and what kind of things have been printed on that press at that time,” says Wall Toles.
She says if you want to learn, you can get started today.
"And it's also a place where I can teach others how to do prints,” says Wall Toles.
