And now a sweet surprise for this week's Locally Made Monday.

Bryan, Ohio is home to one of the world's largest candy companies.

You've probably eaten a Dum Dum's sucker- they've been made by the Spangler Candy Company for over sixty years.

It’s this week's Locally Made Monday report.

It's still making them today with the same ingredients that made them famous in the 1950s.

In the Fifties, it bought the rights to Dum Dums- launching a national phenomenon.

"We've kept the trade name Dum Dum and basically the same shape of the pop and the flavors. Even though were in 2014 now, and even though we've automated the process, the process is still basically the same,” says Spangler Candy Company CEO Kirk Vashaw.

Among its candy concoctions, Spangler has cornered the market in Christmas candy.

"We're the only candy cane producer left in the United States. A lot of people have moved offshore. So we make about forty percent of the candy canes that are sold here in the United States,” Vashaw says.

And most of its ingredients are from regional sources.

Fourth-generation employee Vashaw says it helps keep them local.

"We have a lot of our workforce here that has also worked here a long time, or have had family members that have been here. So of our people have actually had five generations of family members work here at Spangler,” Vashaw says.

Over 70,000 people have taken the trolley tour at the factory since 2006.

And Vashaw says the candy they've seen, and eaten, travels all over the world.

"We do roughly five percent of our business internationally now, and that has been growing. Candy canes especially, but also Dum Dums are growing internationally as well... And a lot of people like American products, and Dum Dums are the quintessential American product,” vashaw says.
