You might remember all those big, thick textbooks you used back in college.

Chances are, some of them were printed right here in northeast Indiana.

It’s this week’s episode of Locally Made Monday.

The Courier Publishing plants up in Kendallville pump out so many books, the company is one of the nation's largest textbook manufacturers.

It's also one of the largest employers in Noble County- helping all those outside dollars have a huge impact in the community.

"Courier is a book manufacturer, we do publishing and content management,” says Courier Vice President Christine Bitner.

Its two plants in Kendallville are the company's only for-color book manufacturing facilities- printing out pages upon pages for textbooks.

"We have an offset plant that does the long-run book manufacturing, and then this digital plant here does the short-run book manufacturing,” Bitner says.

It installed this digital press in April, and are working on a second- allowing for high capacity printing.

"Number of titles for our publisher is ten thousand titles in print. But here in the plants, we can ship anywhere between one and two million books a week, and they actually ship to all over the work,” Bitner says.

And some of these books print in up to ten different languages.

A lot of work for its large local staff.

"We have six hundred sixty employees here in Kendallville alone. We're the largest employer here in Noble County,” Bitner says.
