We salute Army Veteran Jason Shanks, a local man who served overseas in Afghanistan.

"He's a strong person, he's a great dad to his kids and he's always there when you need him."

Chelsea Bolinger describes her brother Jason who she nominated to be a Hometown Hero.

"I know when he deployed I cried.  I cried a lot.  I think it was just the emotions of him leaving, not knowing if he's come back or not."

Jason decided to enter the military at 21 years old.  He served 8 years in the Army, rising to the rank of Corporal.  For 11 months, he also served our country overseas in Afghanistan.

"We were in the process of adopting a little girl and that got pushed aside and we ended up finishing it when I got home.  I missed anniversaries, my wife and I's anniversary, birthdays, holidays.  I got to come home for Thanksgiving in 04."

Jason explains the importance of recognizing service members and veterans.

"We miss everybody when we're over there, but we assume that you guys miss us when we're gone but we don't know it.  We can't feel it and it's good to come home and be told that we're missed and everybody's proud of us."

WFFT salutes Jason Shanks for this week's Hometown Hero.

"I thought coming home to Hometown Hero stuff was over but I didn't know that anyone was going to recognize me again.  It's a good feeling."
